Saint-Rhémy-En-Bosses
Location and history
The village of Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses is located at an altitude of 1521m, extending out at the foot of the Gran San Bernardo Hills. The Hills have always been a transit route and played a determining role in relations between the north and south of Europe. Leaders, pilgrims, popes and travellers have passed along here - the most famous being Napoleon in May 1800. One of the town’s features is a fountain in the main square out of which gushes well-known ‘healing’ waters that flow from 1800m high down through Fonte di Citrin valley.
Winter sports
With access to 180 individual pistes, in the winter Saint-Rhémy-En-Bosses becomes a ski resort. The open, sunny slopes of the Testa di Crevacol are home to about 22km of pistes as high as 2400m, with a view over the whole Gran San Bernardo Valley and excellent exposure to the sun. The appropriate lift pass will also allow you to ski or snowboard in the other Aosta Valley ski resorts.
Summer excursions
There are numerous itineraries for summer excursions on foot or by mountain bike, with all sorts of amazing flora and fauna to see along the way. Excursions are available across the Malatrà Hills, the Citrin and Serena Hills, and the regional fish tourist reserve is also very popular.
Things to see and do
The Strong house at Chez-Vuillen is worth a visit, as is the old stone wash-house with the Count Savin di Bosses’ coat of arms, and the Castle of the Bosses dating back to the 15th century. There’s also the G.S. Bernardo Hospice museum – and you can also visit the nearby ranch where St Bernard dogs are bred. In July, the traditional “Jambon de Bosses“ food festival takes place, dedicated to the region’s famous uncooked ham with its delicate taste, strictly-seasoned in the mountain pastures of the area.
